Which dildo shape is best?

Clicking onto the dildo category on most sex toy websites can often be super overwhelming - there are so many shapes, sizes and textures to choose from! If you have test driven a few different dildo designs, then you may already know what works for you and what doesn't. However, if you have never tried a dildo before, how do you narrow down which one to choose?

When it comes to choosing the shape of a dildo, there are a few things to consider. Size is an important factor when choosing a dildo. Too small and you may not get enough stimulation. Too large and at best you may be uncomfortable using it, or at worse unable to use it entirely. Sometimes our eyes want more than what we can handle.

A 5 inch classic ceramic dildo, a 3 inch cone shaped butt plug and a 7 inch curved dildo in rainbow drip patterns stand on a wooden table against a white wall. A green plant flows from a white pot in the background.

So before you click 'buy now' on that 9 inch dildo, break out the trusty ruler and measure out that length! Not only should you measure the length, but the girth is just as important. If your new dildo is too long, you may still be able to work around the length if the girth isn't overwhelmingly large. It may just limit the number of positions you could use that dildo in. However, if the girth is too large, it may be too uncomfortable to use at all. Measuring out the length and girth will help you visualize the size of the dildo in person, so you can make an informed choice about whether that size works for you.

The next thing to consider is shape. Are you looking for a classic, straight dildo? Or one with a curve to target the g-spot or p-spot? There are two ways you can make this decision; on whether you want a dildo that flows with the curve of your body to reach a particular spot, or if you would like a dildo that provides a more firm stimulation along the shaft as you use it. A curved dildo is a great way to hit the g-spot and p-spot specifically, and the curve helps to navigate your body to target those spots more easily. When using firm sex toy materials, such as ceramic, glass or metal, the curve can be more comfortable to use as well.

Whereas a classic dildo can provide more stimulation and pressure along the inner walls of your body as it is moved. Your body will naturally push against the straight edges of a classic dildo, providing a different type of stimulation, which is further exaggerated when using a firm sex toy material, such as ceramic, glass or metal.

When considering the dildo shape you would prefer, keep in mind the texture of the dildo as well. Dildos with ribbing along the shaft can be great for extra stimulation, but some may find that a classic dildo with this intense texture may be too much. However, a ribbed curved dildo may just be the perfect combination for you! It all depends on the type of stimulation you are looking for.

Two 7 inch ceramic dildos stand on a wooden table against a white wall. The dildo on the left is classic in shape with a purple gradient pattern, while the dildo on the right is curved with a rainbow gradient pattern. Both dildo have the word 'HOBBIT' printed around the base in white. A bright green fern in a white pot sits to the left.

If a ribbed dildo sounds like too much sensation for you, then a dildo with subtle bumps may be better suited, or you could opt for a dildo with many rounded bumps for a happy in-between. A dildo with bumps that gradually increase in size can also be a great starter toy for those wanting to try out anal play as well.

While the size, shape and texture are super important when choosing a dildo, the functionality of the dildo is arguably the most important factor. You could love every part of the dildo design, but if you aren't able to use the dildo how you most want to, then you may not get to enjoy it in the best ways possible. For example; choosing a dildo with a flared base not only means the dildo is safe for anal play, it is also harness compatible. A dildo being harness compatible doesn't always mean that it has to be used as a strap on. You can also use a harness around a pillow to turn using your dildo into a hands-free experience. Not only does a flared base make a dildo more versatile in use, it is also much easier to hold - especially once there is lube involved!

Deciding which dildo to choose for your first can be a tricky decision to make, and no matter how much research you do, you may still find that the dildo you choose isn't perfect for you. Making an informed choice is always the best way to go, and can be super fun - foreplay doesn't just happen in the bedroom or with other people. Researching your next sex toy can build tension and anticipation before you even press 'buy now' on your new toy. So why not get shopping now?!
